چکیده

In this paper, we present a framework for the analysis of a set of adaptive variable-bit-rate voice sources in a packet network. The instantaneous bit rate of each source is determined by an end-to-end control mechanism that, based on measurements of packet delay and loss rate, selects the rate that best matches current network conditions. Several such algorithms can be analyzed with the proposed framework, which consists of a detailed Markovian model of the source behavior and of an approximate description of the interaction between sources and underlying network. The model of the source takes into account time intervals during which a connection is active as well as intervals of inactivity; within a given conversation, it also models on/off (speech/silence) periods. The interaction of a source with the rest of the system is derived through an iterative procedure that evaluates the feedback that a source receives from the network. A case study presenting the results relative to an adaptive system based on three widely used speech coding standards (PCM at 64 kb/s, GSM Full Rate at 13 kb/s and G.729 at 8 kb/s) illustrates the proposed framework and concludes the paper.

ASPF: An Adaptive anti-SPIT Policy-based Framework

SPam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) is a rising IP voice telephony threat. Voice over IP enables the transmission of telephone calls over the Internet, as opposed to plain old telephone service. Internet Telephony essentially means low-cost phone calls, i.e. a clear benefit for both consumers and businesses, which may also lead to cheap methods of mass advertising. Still, industry observers war...

Adaptive Voice over IP

We discuss the technical viability of transporting real-time voice over IP networks when the output rate of the speech encoder is adjusted to match the characteristics of the network: speech is coded at low bit rates when the network is congested; at higher bit rates, otherwise. First, issues affecting perceptual QoS are analyzed. The rationale for Adaptive Voice over IP (AVoIP) is explained an...

Security testing of session initiation protocol implementations

The mechanisms which enable the vast majority of computer attacks are based on design and programming errors in networked applications. The growing use of voice over IP (VOIP) phone technology makes these phone applications potential targets. We present a tool to perform security testing of VOIP applications to identify security vulnerabilities which can be exploited by an attacker. Session Ini...
